Walking across campus this morning a bright blue bumper sticker caught my eye in one of the staff lots. I was a tad confused as to the purpose of said sticker. Here is what I read:
Who exactly is this speaking to? Is this a thing? Is there a large population of Catholics that are afraid of polling places? Does the general public have the opinion that Catholics don’t believe in participating in any activity of the government? I’m just not quite sure I understand the link between these two statements.
Sure, their faith influences some of their choices when the cast a ballot, but everyone’s faith (or lack-there-of) does, right? … so that can’t be it. Maybe the owner of this bumper sticker knows something I don’t… now I feel left out. What if I want to make a brightly colored statement like this? …my church doesn’t have any of these nifty stickers.
I guess I’ll just have to design one myself. If you too feel left out, don’t you worry. It’s really quite simple to make one for your church or group, too.
1) I’m a ________ (insert desired label)
2) & (or “and” if you prefer)
3) and I _______! (add an activity that basically anyone can do whether they are in your group or not, preferably something governmental and/or widely open to the general population)
Here is what I came up with: I’m non-denominational and I go to the post office!
Okay, hang on. I’m super excited to display this on my car, so I’ll be right back.
……
(brief intermission)
……
Wow. That felt good. Now everyone that sees my car will know exactly what kind of person I am. I mean, sure, the “Jesus fish” lets people know I’m a Christian, but did they know that I am an experienced stamp using, card sending, bill paying, non-denominational Christian? Didn’t think so. But now, now they know.
I hope you are all brave enough to join me in this movement. Whether you’re a Lutheran that takes public transit or a Methodist that writes letters to your congressman, I urge you to let your new sticker make an impact on those around you. I’m still not entirely certain of the purpose, but whatever it is, it sure must be important.
I AM A BUDDHIST AND I GO TO THE DMV!
You’re right, it feels really damn good to get that off my chest.
